We Are Looking For An Executive Director

 

The newly-created positon of Executive Director will have responsibility for maintaining and expanding our operations.

 

About VSMC: Villages of San Mateo County (VSMC) is a 501(c)(3) ‘hub and spoke’ organization formed to help older residents of San Mateo county age in place. VMSC is the hub organization that currently supports two local Village spokes:

  • Sequoia Village serves residents of Redwood City, Redwood Shores, Belmont and San Carlos
  • Mid Peninsula Village serves residents of Burlingame, Hillsborough and San Mateo

 

VSMC (and the local Villages) aims to assist seniors and others in finding the services and information they need to remain safe and healthy in their own homes.  In addition, we organize activities outside the home, such as shopping trips, lectures, and social events.

 

About the Position: This  individual (in consultation with the Board of Directors and volunteer leads) will oversee all VSMC daily operations, including staffing, outreach, and new service development, and also work with the Board on budgeting and fundraising.

 

This 24 to 30 hour/week position requires working with a wide range of local and regional/national organizations and institutions, and with the diverse members of VSMC and our Villages.

 

Necessary Qualifications Include: We are looking for candidates with experience managing a small staff, familiarity with nonprofit organizations, a BA/MA in a related social science field, demonstrated project management skills, and a real heart for working with a senior clientele.

Job Description

Executive Director

 

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for maintaining and expanding the operation of the Villages of San Mateo County (VSMC), a 501(c)(3) ‘hub and spoke’ organization formed to help older residents of San Mateo county age in place.

 

VSMC is the hub organization that currently supports two local Village spokes:

  • Sequoia Village serves residents of Redwood City, Redwood Shores, Belmont and San Carlos
  • Mid Peninsula Village serves residents of Burlingame, Hillsborough and San Mateo

     

    VSMC (and the local Villages) aims to assist seniors and others in finding the services and information they need to remain safe and healthy in their own homes.  In addition, we organize activities outside the home, such as shopping trips, lectures, and social events.

     

    The ED, in consultation with the Board of Directors and volunteer leads, oversees all VSMC daily operations, including staffing, outreach, and new service development, and also works with the Board on budgeting and fundraising. 

     

    The position requires working with a wide range of local and, in some cases, national organizations and institutions, and with the diverse members of VSMC and our Villages. A successful ED must work effectively with and through others to achieve organizational goals.

     

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    Oversees Office Operations and Delivery of Member Services

     

  • Manages volunteer leads to ensure that the VSMC office is appropriately staffed, supplied, and physically well-maintained
  • Ensures that projects requested by each functional area are supported as needed and resources allow
  • Consults with the Board on major expenditures or improvements relating to office functions
  • Makes recommendations and suggestions to the Board for an annual budget; manages VSMC resources within established budget guidelines
  • Oversees the Service Request program (transportation, home repairs, technology assistance, and so on) as administered by volunteers and office staff, and assures delivery of services to members
  • Ensures that VSMC referral information, listings of service providers, and programs are regularly reviewed and updated; seeks out new information and programs to better meet the needs of members

     

    Recruits New Members and Retains Existing Members

     

  • In consultation with the Board and volunteer leads, develops and implements a strategy for recruiting new members and for retaining existing members

     

    Recruits New Volunteers/Leads and Retains Existing Volunteers/Leads

     

  • In consultation with the Board and volunteer leads, develops and implements a strategy for recruiting new volunteers and leads, and for retaining both

     

    Supports Board of Directors and Its Programs

     

  • Manages implementation of Board decisions and ensures that programs and services are consistent with overall VSMC aims; attends and participates in regular Board meetings
  • For major Board-sponsored projects and events, creates project plans with appropriate budgets and timelines; provides regular status reports to the Board and, upon completion of the project or event, evaluates cost/benefits of these efforts
  • Plays a leadership role in fundraising activities, including grant-writing

     

    Performs Outreach Functions

     

  • Looks to all appropriate media and mechanisms to promote VSMC, to raise its profile within the area, and to expand membership and services to other communities in San Mateo County
  • Contributes information/text for the VSMC outreach vehicles (for example, the organization’s website and periodic newsletters); may provide copy for promotional material, such as brochures, flyers, mailings, ads, and so on
  • Acts as principal VSMC spokesperson in local media, public forums, and community meetings; represents VSMC at a wide range of municipal, neighborhood, regional and national gatherings
  • Develops partnerships with other local, city, county, state and national organizations that can provide services to members

     

     

     

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

     

    Experience

     

  • Management: Experience managing a small staff and familiar with nonprofit organizations
  • Social and Regulatory: Significant work with seniors; familiarity with laws and regulations that affect services to older people
  • 3+ years of professional and/or volunteer experience in customer service area

     

    Qualifications & Skills

     

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as gerontology, human services, social work, communications, social sciences or business administration; advanced study preferred
  • Excellent listening, writing and oral communication skills
  • Proficient using MS Office products (PC-based) and web-based (social networking) applications
  • Fundraising and marketing skills
  • Social skills: Enjoys interacting with people, and exhibits patience and compassion in dealing with needs of individuals; ability to work with diverse personalities and client populations
  • Problem solver: Able to research problems and develop creative solutions
  • Project management skills: Can translate strategic directions into plans with discrete goals and actions, and manage teams to a successful conclusion
  • Writer: Can prepare outreach and publicity materials, write and/or edit organization’s communications and grant proposals

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

Hours:   24 – 30 hours a week

Benefits: To be determined

Paid Personal Leave (including sick leave):  12 days a year (in addition to holidays)

Reports to: VSMC Board (primary point of contact is the Board President)
